It has been confirmed that both the 5-speed and 6-speed transmissions contain brass syncros. Here is some info. from the Bentley Forum:
It uses GL-4.
The 5-speed manual transmission (AWD) is an 01A code. This transmission was introduced in 1988 by Audi and is still used in 2003.
The 6-speed manual tranmission (AWD) is an 01E code. This transmission was initially introduce in 1992 as a 5-speed transmission (for the UrS4). In the late 90's another gear was "added" to this tranmission but the internals stayed the same.
Both the 01A and 01E have (and always will) use a GL-4 fluid. These tranmission have syncro rings made of brass that require the GL-4 spec fluid. On top of that the transmissions do not produce the internal pressures that require a GL-5 spec fluid.
Use GL-4, that's what these trannies have used for over a decade now.

So, I have discovered that GL-5 rated fluid is not an "upgraded" fluid that surpasses GL-4 requirements, instead it is a fluid that is not intended to be used in our brass syncro'd transmissions. The GL-5 rated fluids contain sulfurs that are part of their "extreme pressure" additive package. These sulfure corrode our syncros and reduce their lifespans.
So why does my GL-5 super expensive tranny fluid feel better in my Audi?
Because it is an excellent fluid that resists pressure and lubricates in a superb manner. It should and will work very well in the short term. However, in the long term it will cause decreased syncro life and the possibility (nay probability) of a transmission failure.
In conclusion, I would recommend a GL-4 rated 75w-90 transmission lube such as Redline MT-90 for the transmission and center diff. For cold climate use, it is possible (not original spec, however) to use the lighter weight Redline MTL 75w-80 lube. It is also GL-4 rated. The rear diff. requires a GL-5 rated gear lube such as the Redline 75w-90 High Performance Gear Oil. That is GL-5 rated and intended only for the rear diff.
Use 3 quarts for the tranny and 2 quarts for the rear diff. Cheers!

A curved ball here. See if you can make sense of it all.
I got these from both my dealer's service manuals and from the highest Audi tech in Canada. Can you check what kind of oil would be needed if we decide to upgrade or change the oil for these trannies.
First this info is from Audi's chief tech;
Note they have it here that the 3.0l V6 had a 5 speed too. Most likely in its first year of production in Europe only. As far as I know we only got the V6 3.0l with the 6 speed here.
Both the V6 3.0l and the 1.8T used the 01A in the 5 speed AWD. They started the manufacturing in Sept/2000. The tranny code for the 3.0l is FJV and for the 1.8T the code is FNU. So 01A/FJV or 01A/FNU. The final drive in both the 3.0l and the 1.8T are the same at 35:9 = 3.889, so is reverse. However, First through Fifth are not the same.
ON the B6 S4, the tranny is a completely new one. The code for the 6 speed AWD tranny is 0A3/FVD. This tranny started production in NOV/2002.
Now the following info came from my Audi dealer's latest up to date shop manuals;
Starting in MY 2004 for the 1.8T and perhaps at the same time for the 3.0l V6, both cars now have a NEW 6 SPEED tranny. Production for this new tranny started in April/2003. This means that the first 3.0l V6 powered cars that came here with a 6 speed DO NOT have the same tranny as the newer (2004?) cars.
The new code for the 6 speed AWD tranny is 02X/GJW for the 1.8T and 02X/GJV.
Also to be noted on this new tranny is the differences in ratios between the V6 3.0l and 1.8T.
- Reverse, First and Second have the same ratios.
- Fourth is almost the same.
- Third, Fifth and sixth are not the same
- The final drive is also not the same.
Now with this new info, is it possible for you to research what kind of oils this new tranny will accept? Maybe this new tranny will accept GL-5.
Also I researched the rear diff. They are ALL THE SAME at least from the MY2002 to my 2004.

I'm sure i could have called mobil 1 and asked if it was ok to use their fluid. I bet they would have said "sure our GL-5 fluid is better than that redline Gl-4, just put it in there". I dont think so. I'd rather look at the data from impartial parties. Cheers! Mike
