That involves pulling the motor? A guy I know just bought one and is freaked out by that...
Can't the transmission just come out?
Sorry if repost.

It's not a required replacement unless you are having misfires usually with a CEL.
Some have had them replaced under 50K miles, others later.
Just wait for it to break then deal with it if it happens.
It's been a very small number of people with this issue so far. I don't think we've seen anyone hit 150K yet.

They did that so the engine would fit. The V8 found in the A6/A8 platform has a much more simple belt drive on the front of the engine.

The new A6, A8, and Q7 all have rear chain drive. I've got one in my C5-based allroad as well. They fit it in without using the extended front-end on the C5 A6.
The beauty of the version used in the C5 allroad was that you can flash S4 horsepower (Audi electronically detuned it), making it one of the few NA engines you can kick 40-53 hp with just a flash.

I haven't heard of one needing a chain tensioner yet. You could count on one hand the folks with 4.2 problems. Now the 2.7T is a totally different story (and I've BTDT)...
