The Audi Ingolstadt plant is situated at the heart of Bavaria, the German federal state with the strongest economy. The Ingolstadt plant is not only the company’s biggest production facility, it is also still home to the head office and Technical Development Division of AUDI AG. AUTO UNION AG was already entered in the Commercial Register of Ingolstadt in 1949.

The city now has a population of more than 120,000 inhabitants. The company started out by producing motorcycles, delivery vans and spare parts in the old Ingolstadt fortress. With 31.304 employees (as at 31.12.06) Audi is today the region’s biggest employer.

AUDI AG achieved not only a new sales record for the eleventh time in succession in 2006 with 905,188 vehicles sold; it also set a new production record, manufacturing more than 924,085 Audi vehicles (up 14.1 percent). More than half a million (more precisely, 537,047) vehicles produced in the Audi A3 and Audi A4 model lines at the Audi plant in Ingolstadt contributed towards this new record.

905,188 cars were handed over to customers worldwide, equivalent to an increase of 9.2 percent. Historic record figures were recorded for sales in more than 40 markets worldwide. The largest individual export market is the USA with 90,116 units (83,066, up 8.5 percent), followed by Great Britain with 86,003 units (81,374, up 5.7 percent) and China with 81,708 (58,878, up 38.8 percent).

The highest growth rate among the major European markets was achieved by Spain, which recorded an increase of 10.3 percent to 54,557 units (49,453). Next in the list of the markets boasting the highest growth rate was France with an increase of 9.7 percent to 42,545 (41,498) and Italy with an increase of 6.2 percent to 59,002 units (55,574). 86,003 vehicles were sold in Great Britain, corresponding to growth of 5.7 % (81,374). Audi sold 257,792 vehicles in Germany. This equated to 10,667 vehicles or 4.3 percent more than 2005.

The positive development in Eastern Europe continued in 2006 with growth of 31.7 percent. Audi recorded an outstanding result in Russia in particular, with growth of 64.3 percent to 10,050 units (6,115).
