Supercars are always being read about on the internet but the Audi R8 has more Google searches than any of them over the past year.

The Audi R8 might not be the newest, fastest, or most expensive supercar on the market. However, that doesn’t mean people are not still interested in it. In fact, people seem to be more interested in the R8 than any other supercar out there. Based on an analysis of Google search data from the past 12 months Confused.com (interesting domain name for a site doing data analysis) found that the Audi R8 was searched for more than any other supercar. Over 22.5 million Google searches were performed on the sportiest Audi. That is 2.5 million more than the second place Lamborghini Urus.

Perhaps it is nostalgia that has so many people searching on the R8. As we know the lovely mid-engine supercar is coming to an end. Maybe it comes back as an EV but the thrilling V10 is a thing of the past. Or maybe people have been searching for it so much simply because it is still a terrific supercar. It has the looks and performance to put it on par with the best in the world and people still like to read about it. It is also somewhat of a bargain in the supercar space, and everyone loves a bargain. Starting at about $150K for a 562 horsepower V10 with a top speed of over 200 mph the Audi does offer good value.

Most Google Searches

Audi R8

When it came to supercar Google searches over the past 12 months. The Audi R8 took the top spot, and the Lambo SUV took second place. The final step of the podium was taken by the BMW i8. This i8 ended production in 2020 and yet people still searched it over 18 million times. With that in mind it is possible that the Audi R8 could remain one of the most searched supercars even after it goes out of production. The top ten searches are listed below.

Rank Model Annual Google searches
1 Audi R8 22,530,000
2 Lamborghini Urus 20,060,000
3 BMW i8 18,430,000
4 Toyota Supra 17,260,000
5 Ford Mustang 16,650,000
6 Nissan GTR 15,540,000
7 Porsche 911 15,480,000
8 Lamborghini Aventador 11,555,000
9 Bugatti Chiron 10,981,000
10 Lamborghini Huracan 8,403,000

Supercars?

R8 V10

One thing that was not made clear is what exactly was the criteria used by Confused.com to determine if a car was in fact a supercar. Look at the full list. The Toyota Supra? A Ford Mustang? Those cars have their fans for sure, but I don’t think even the biggest Mustang fan would have the audacity to refer to it as a supercar. Or even a sportscar for that matter. But that aside the fact remains that the Audi R8 still had more searches. In fact, there were more Google searches on the R8 than the Bugatti Chiron and Lamborghini Huracan combined! And the Chiron you can even put in the hypercar category.

VW Group Domination

Google searches

Another interesting point to take from this list is look at the VW group performance overall. Under VW is of course Audi, Porsche, and Lamborghini. Rimac recently took controlling interest in Bugatti, but Porsche still owns a significant stake in the company so let’s give them Bugatti as well. That being the case six of the ten most searched supercars have a VW attachment. That is an impressive feat and gives a bit of insight into just how desirable VW group vehicles are. Of course, according to this data none stir up more interest than the amazing Audi R8.
