Legendary Audi R8 goes out with a bang among record-setting sales for the entirety of the Audi lineup. Here’s a look at those figures.

With the end of the 2023 model year, we wave a teary-eyed goodbye to the legendary Audi R8. Nothing gold can stay, but it didn’t go out quietly.  With 631 models sold throughout the 2023 calendar year, the R8 saw a 101 percent increase in sales compared to 2022. It wasn’t just the R8 that had a big year, though. Audi as a whole had a record-setting year last year with 10 models blowing last year’s sales out of the water.

Audi’s recent press release outlines the company’s 2023 sales, and the figures are looking quite inspiring for the four-rings. So inspiring, in fact, that 2023 was the biggest year for Audi sales in the company’s entire history. Unsurprisingly, the cheaper models in the lineup hold the top slots for sales. However, a large portion of the sales increases also come courtesy of Audi’s expansion of its battery-electric vehicle offerings. Let’s dive in.

The A3 and A4 Sit Atop the Sales List

Overall, Audi delivered 228,550 vehicles in 2023. That’s a 22 percent increase compared to 2022. According to Audi, Q4 2023 was its sixth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. The most sold vehicle was the A3 model line, which includes the A3, S3, and RS3. In total, Audi delivered 13,625 A3 line vehicles in 2023. That’s a 39 percent increase compared to 2022. However, the A4 line’s total deliveries of 13,550 keeps it in second place overall but reflects a decrease in sales of 11 percent year over year. It seems that the slightly cheaper A3 lineup is more attractive to the masses.

In a textbook example of model planning, the A5, A6, A7, and A8 take the next respective spots. However, in seventh place, the e-tron GT saw a 41 percent increase in sales year over year. This is the highest electric offering on the 2023 sales list. However, figures throughout the electric lineup lead us to believe that might not be the case for the 2024 model year. They are seeing a drastic increase in sales.

The Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron saw sales increases of 176 percent and 352 percent, respectively. Other than the R8, these two vehicles are the only ones that saw a three-digit percentage increase in sales in 2023. The Q8 e-tron also saw a modest increase in sales of nine percent. While not as drastic as the others, it’s certainly worth taking note.

Finally, the SUV segment, as one would expect, saw a pretty solid increase across the board with the exception of the Q3. The mighty little Audi SUV saw a decrease in sales of 11 percent year over year. However, the Q7 and Q8 saw overall increases of 50 percent and 45 percent, respectively.

Overall, it seems that the electric Audi lineup is proving to be a solid investment for the company. In addition, it seems that the company’s sedan models are still selling quite nicely. That’s great news for folks in the anti-crossover camp. We’ll just have to see how sales go through 2024!
