Audi Issues Massive Recall Impacting Multiple Models Over Defective Airbags

Audi Airbag Recall

A number of newer Audi models may have incorrectly installed driver seat side airbags, which could cause problems in the event of a crash.

Recalls are obviously not ideal for automakers or owners impacted by them, but in reality, these actions are designed to precent injuries – and worse – stemming from defects from happening. Every automaker issues recalls on at least a semi-routine basis, and that list includes Audi, of course. Recently, Audi issued a pretty extensive recall covering a number of its models, albeit over one particular issue – improperly mounted airbags – and it’s one that owners should be aware of.

This new recall pertains to the driver’s seat side air bag, which may have been improperly mounted to the seatback frame. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 214, “Side Impact Protection.” This recall affects a variety of models totaling 1,001 units including the following, but only those built within the specified date ranges listed below:

  • 2023-2024 Audi Q7 (August 11, 2023 – October 26, 2023)
  • 2023-2024 Audi Q8 (August 11, 2023 – October 23, 2023)
  • 2023-2024 Audi RS Q8 (August 15, 2023 – November 3, 2023)
  • 2023-2024 Audi SQ8 (August 11, 2023 – October 19, 2023)
  • 2024 Audi SQ7 (August 15, 2023 – September 26, 2023)

Audi Airbag Recall

According to the NHTSA, in the event of a crash, the position of the inflated airbag may differ from that intended, and as a result, the performance of the airbag might not be as designed, increasing the risk of injury. The problem was traced back to worker error that occurred on the assembly line of the airbag supplier, not in any sort of Audi factory, however. This issue came to light after the supplier performed a normal quality test. So far, no injuries or accidents stemming from the airbag issue have been reported.

To rectify this airbag mounting issue, dealers will inspect the insulation of the driver’s seat side airbag and – if necessary – will install it correctly, free of charge. There are no parts needed for this process, and Audi isn’t planning on offering any sort of reimbursement plan, as all of the aforementioned vehicles are covered under the factory warranty.
