Audi Q6 e-tron SUV Will Make its Debut by 2022

Audi will introduce an all-electric Audi Q6 e-tron SUV by 2022 as well as more than 20 electric-only models by 2025.

California-based EV manufacture Tesla is responsible for bringing battery-powered cars into the mainstream. The company’s electric drivetrain and battery technology is the reason why Tesla is the world’s most valuable automaker right now. As a standalone EV brand, Tesla does not have the scaling and distribution privileges that legacy automakers enjoy.

This has allowed Tesla’s rivals such as Mercedes and Audi to expand their electrification strategy aggressively. Recently, German automaker Audi announced that it will introduce an all-electric Audi Q6 e-tron SUV by 2022. In a bid to one-up Audi, the Tri-Star brand also announced that it will be introducing four new electric vehicles in the US market by 2022.

Audi is amidst a major overhaul right now, and the company’s Board Chairman, Markus Duesmann, confirmed that the brand will no longer develop internal combustion engines. Duesmann also disclosed that Audi plans on tweaking its existing internal combustion powerplants to meet the new Euro 7 emission norms.

Duesmann’s revelation was part of a speech that the Chairman gave during Audi’s Annual Press Conference. The Chairman also confirmed that the upcoming Audi Q6 e-tron will be the first model to feature Volkswagen’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture. Porsche and Audi are currently co-developing VW’s upcoming PPE vehicle platform.

Audi might even use the PPE EV architecture to underpin a new Tesla Model S rival, which is probably being developed under the codename Landjet. The Landjet model is being developed as part of VW’s Project Artemis program. The PPE platform will also be used to build badge-engineered versions of the electric sedan for Volkswagen’s premium subsidies- Porsche and Bentley.

Porsche will also use the upcoming Audi Q6 e-tron to build a badge-engineered electric SUV, which will be introduced under the company’s Macan nameplate. Audi reckons that by the middle of this decade, the company’s battery-powered models will contribute to 1/3 of its overall sales.

Considering that the popularity of SUVs, crossover, and pickup trucks is at an all-time high right now, it stands to reason that the upcoming Q6 e-tron electric SUV will play a major role in achieving Audi’s goal. The company has also confirmed that it intends on introducing more than 20 battery-powered vehicles by the year 2025.
