Modded Coupe Quattro Channels Spirt of Audi S2

Wrapped in red with a black/gray interior plus black wheels, 1991 Audi Coupe Quattro includes Euro-spec S2 hood and Hella headlights.

In 1989, Audi delivered to the United States the Coupe Quattro, the liftback version of the B3 era Audi 80. Instead of being a rally monster like the ur-Quattro, though, the Coupe Quattro, like the regular 80, was made for grand touring. Thus, comfort and luxury were the order of the day. No boisterous hill climbs, just cozy cruising around on a Sunday afternoon.

This 1991 Coupe Quattro, though, leans more towards sportiness. Currently on Bring a Trailer, the Audi channels the spirit of its European sibling, the ur-S itself, the S2.

The Coupe Quattro’s current appearance comes from its current owner, who dressed up the Audi with a red wrap. A full set of 18-inch OZ Racing wheels in black helm the corners, and Hella headlights light the way around the bend. The cherry on top, though, is the hood and front bumper from a Euro-spec S2, a beast whose 2.2-liter turbo-five helped the coupe cross 60 mph in under six seconds, topping out at 155 mph.

Underneath the S2 hood is the U.S. Coupe Quattro’s 2.3-liter, 20-valve inline-five. Unlike the 2.2-liter’s 227 horses, though, the slightly bigger engine offered only 164 horses for the road. The output found the corners through a five-speed manual, allowing the Audi to trot along over 188,000 miles thus far.

Inside, the front buckets of the Coupe Quattro have been replaced by a set of Sparco racing seats covered in black fabric with white stitching. The rest of the gray interior looks almost like it did when new, aside from the Sparco steering wheel and S2 shift knob. Even the factory cassette stereo still lives on, in case anyone ordered any vaporwave cassettes from Bandcamp.

This Coupe Quattro won’t burn up the open road, nor will it carve a new one from the earth. However, the Audi is at home cruising along the neon-lit Art Deco haunts near its current Floridian residence. It’s sure to draw everyone’s attention wherever it goes next, too. After all, no one can miss a classic Audi in red.
