To further its upscale image, Audi commissioned a coupe version of the 100, selling it from 1970 to 1976. The clean, sophisticated lines hinted at speed, but the car was hamstrung with a 112-hp 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine. Audi tested a wider-bodied version of the 100 Coupe that used Porsche’s new V8 engine. The cars were development mules for the new Porsche 928, but Audi considered building V8 versions of the Coupe. Too bad that never happened!
