Audi faced a bit of a predicament when it launched the R8 supercar back in 2006. When it first appeared, it arrived with a 414 horsepower 4.2 liter V8, and while this engine was a commendable piece of technology, it was not meant for the supercar ranks, and some of its competitors had no problem making fun of it out in the proverbial playground. But the one thing that the R8 had going for itself was that it had friends in plenty of high places. In this instance, it happened to be in the same automotive empire as fabled supercar maker Lamborghini, who kindly let the R8 lift the Gallardo’s 5.2 liter V10. The rest as they say is history, with the 518 horsepower engine greatly enhancing the car’s performance manners. The R8 GT eventually pushed power up to 552 horsepower, and the meatier twelve-cylinder also drove the V8 out of the lineup when the car was updated for its second-generation a few years later.
