1. Audi RS6 / RS7 Quattro

Audi RS6

More than anything, the fourth-gen Audi RS6 highlights where Audi was going. A 553-hp twin-turbo V8 replaced the over-the-top V10. Yet performance improved. It accelerated faster, had a higher top speed, was lighter, and handled better. Technology took a leap forward with better, more configurable driving assists, a glass instrument panel, and optional laser headlights.

The RS6 also showed where Audi had come from. The styling was updated, sharper, and more chiseled but still unmistakably Audi. With its flared fenders and Quattro all-wheel drive, it continued a lineage that started with the RS 2 Avant. And when it’s done snacking on BMWs, the RS6 does all of the practical, family wagon stuff like hauling cub scouts or making trips to IKEA. Once again, the U.S. got slighted when Audi decided not to import the RS6 Avant. But we eventually got something just as good in a hatchback – the Audi RS7.
