is it the Camshaft OR crankshaft position sensor?

First, here are my symptoms:
I've been getting an intermittent CEL and the code being kicked out is P0010 for the camshaft actuator. The code comes on every once and a while but then goes off and the car runs fine. A week ago my car wouldn't start. It would crank but wouldn't start. I waited a few hours and tried again and it started. It has been fine for a week, but last night the car died after I started it and hasn't started since. I don't think it is the fuel pump because I sprayed some carb cleaner into the throttle body to see if I could get it to start but nothing, so it seems to be getting fuel.
I've spoken to my mechanic and have been searching the forums. It seems to either be the camshaft position sensor (which I'm not sure if that is the same as the actuator) or the crankshaft position sensor.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

they cant seem to find the problem. They keep trying to throw parts at it. They first changed the cam position sensor then they tried the camshaft tensioner a $700 part. It still comes and goes. The mechanic wanted to put a whole new engine harness in at $1400 but I had enough.
It seems to be only on 01 cars. I have yet to have one person tell me where the camshaft position actuator is. There is no part number availible. Do you get throttle cut sometimes? I do sometimes when starting to accelerate. I would like to find someone who specializes in the 1.8T to get this fixed.

First it was the solder on the aftermarket ECU chip. Second, a year later, it was the ECU power relay going bad. Both were very annoying gremlins. The ECU power relay was only $10 so maybe worth a try?
