This is on a 01 VW Passat 1.8t AUG engine code.
I removed the tensioner to clean the gasket area and put it all back togather, lined up the way it was when I put it in. I had painted the links and the CAM sprokets to make sure it didn't skip a tooth. Double checked before putting the VC back on and the marks were dead on.
After reinstalling every thing the car seemed fine when starting it the first time. Now It takes a crank or two to start the car and the car drives normally with no back fires or noticable change in performance. But I got a solid CEL and the 16727 code saying that the CPS signal is too high. Also, when idling, the car has a irregular oscillation thats kind of slow. After clearing the code, it just comes right back. And when I unplug the CPS, it makes no difference in th engine idle (no jump or chg in rythm or anything) - it just adds a code for open circuit in addition to the 16727.
So since I'm not getting any misfires or loss of performance, does it sound like the Cam Position Sensor could have been damaged? Or, does it sound like the CAMs are a tooth off?

"the chain is in the right place but one of the cams is not."
What does that mean? How can the cams change position if it's all connected to the timing belt and the crank? The TB never moved teeth marks. I watched it closely. Am I missing something?

Also, I found that one of the ends of the meal hose that connects to the combi valve and runs along the side of the VC on the airbox side was cracked. Could a leak in that pipe have caused a code with the CAM Position Sensor input?

the counting of the chains is really ****ed up on these motors. I forget which side is which but basically when both cam knotches are pointing up, the marks should be counted from the mark to the outside ...if that makes any sence. Basixally the 16th link isjust past the knotch.
Sounds like you have your cams a link off.The sensors just don't fail and its too much of a coincidence.

I noticed that my paint marks were off one btwn the chain and the sproket on the righ/intake CAM. I shifted it over to make it line up again, but when I looked at this picture, I relized that the make I made was wide. When I shifted it back, the paint mark was narrow that I centered the chain marks to. So I'm confident that part of my wide paint mark got chipped off the sprocket making it appear that the chain was off 1 tooth.

Now I just have to figure out which direction I shifted it.

and the alignment arrows on the bearing caps, align with 15 or 16 links, depending on the amount of bow in the cam chain/timing adjuster position.
