idle stumble?
I have a 99 1.8t quattro with roughly 106K miles. I love my car and I would love to keep it, however it performs terrible. Being that I only know pretty basic stuff about cars, I just cannot figure out why my car is running so terribly. I went in to get my alternator fixed a few months ago, and the guy had mentioned that another problem with my car is an "idle stumble" I took it to Audi and they ran it throug the computer and said nothing was wrong. My car accelorates veryyyyy slow and has a pause similarly to if I had a clutch. Also, when I take my foot off the gas my car thuds. No one can seem to figure out what the problem is. Any suggestions?

definitely sounds like you have a vacuum leak. you should be able to hear it with the engine running at idle. just listen for the hissing. if leak can be found it is possible the mass air flow sensor is bad. the sensor reads the amount of air entering the engine and engine control module receives this information and then sends the proper amount of fuel. the sensor may be reading air but not the correct amount of air which can cause all kinds of problems like the ones you are describing. eventually a bad mass air flow sensor will cause a check engine light with a fault present for engine running to lean or rich. depending on your engine the mass air flow sensor is located either on or in the air filter box. hope this helps.

its funny you mentioned the mass air flow sensor. my check engine light came on a few months ago and when i took it in they said thats what it was. unfortunetly i was broke at the time so i couldnt fix it, however the light went out so i just never bothered. i guess the problem didnt fix itsself then haha

yeah i would probably replace the sensor. it is really easy to do and is a plug and play sensor. only thing you will need to do is erase the faults in the engine control module after replacing the sensor. hope it works out for you.
