Odd Scratching Noise in low gears on '01 A4 1.8T

Hi Audi Lovers,
I have a 2001 Audi A4 1.8T 5-speed manual with about 64k miles. In general it's been a dream to own, and I've followed the maintenance regimen to a T, and mostly in-door garaged the car her entire life. Over the past few months I've started to notice a scratching sound that quickly occurs when I begin to accelerate in low gears (usually first and second only). It's extremely brief and only occurs when the engine is fully warmed up. I have not noticed any decrease in performance, however. Does anyone out there recognize this issue and have any advice for me? Thanks!

Yes, more of a grinding sound, though very brief, less than a second. It occurs every time I throttle up in first gear and second gear, sometimes third. Does not happen if I downshift. Feels like it is coming from under the engine block. Sound familiar?

Sound like it might be the tensioner going. Sometimes if the owner is really lucky, the tensioner will make some noise before it pukes. At 64k you are close enough. Do the belt service and eliminate it as a possibility. Do not wait!
