but whatever it is if you keep driving it with the oil pressure light coming on, there is a good chance of destroying your engine. You should have a mechanic look at it asap. How often do you change the oil and what kind do you use?

It only makes tha funky noise when the light goes on, I changed the pressure switch and changed the oil (5w40 full synthetic). The light came on for a short period of time after that so I turned off the car, started it back up and the light has not been on since. If it is oil sludge what is involved in repairing it? The dealership says the will not touch unless the light is on.

How often had you been changing the oil before this and have you always used synthetic? Was the old oil real black and nasty?
If it is an oil sludge problem (this is a guess) this is what many people have used http://www.auto-rx.com, sometimes it helped and sometimes not depending on how bad it was or if the pickup screen in the oil pan was badly clogged.
If you search the b6 a4 forums you will find lots of information about this as it is a common problem with this engine. Oil changes should be done every 5000 miles and only use a synthetic approved for this engine.

Then oil sludge is probably an issue. The previous owner didn't take very good care of the car then. I wouldn't be surprised if the light starts coming on again. Better take care of this asap or you may end up needing a new engine soon. It's insane that the dealer won't look at the car, it seems like they are putting you off until it is too late.

Probably didnt change oil for sure
I have used and still use AutoRX to clean the sludge out, I have on 2 occasions also ran Seafoam through the crankcase as well when doing an oil change, just to help dissolve the sludge quicker and making sure the top of the engine is getting oil, any blockages in those oil lines and you are hosed
For your money www.autorx.com, Frank is the inventor and he has heaps of testimonials so its no bull, it works.
If its bad bad, do a Seafoam clean, which is 1/2 can of Seafoam (Autozone etc)in the crankcase, idle ther car or take it for a short drive, til the car is up to temperature (not a 3 hrs drive, some have done that but dont) Change the oil and filter, refill with new oil and you are set
