I'm not willing to try it because of a lack of first hand experience.
Filtration of harmful particles is science not hearsay. There is not only a specific SAE test procedure (Society of Automotive Engineers Test Code J726) for testing filter media there is a commercially available test 'dirt' for running this test.
The OEM paper filter relies on holes smaller than the size 'dirt' particle that has been tested to show damage to a car engine. The downside is that the tiny holes tend to not flow air all that easily, especially as the holes get plugged by 'filtered' debris. An oiled foam or oiled cloth (K&N) filter relies on a coating of sticky oil to trap these particles as without the oil the media's holes are too large to stop the smaller harmful particles.
Now if you wish to disregard all the science behind air filtration that is certainly your perogative. However, it is our perogative to caution those who might be inclined to follow your folly.

This is the kind of simpleton that when you warn him he's sitting on the wrong side of the tree branch he's cutting off, he gets mad at you. Then when he crashes to the ground he blames you for not warning him. Let him burn - he needs to.
