Turbos and synthetic oil
Have an A4 1.8T with about 80K miles. Previous owner had oil changed with Mobil1 at a local Audi dealer every 5K miles. I know that Audi is recommending synthetic because of the sludge problem. But, every other Turbo I've owned has not taken well to synthetic. Oil seems to be getting by the seals on this one. Seems a bit premature for 80K car. Anyone else have a similar experience?

What seals?
The turbocharger's internal seals? The oil feed/return lines? What seals... what are you looking for a reason to use junk oil? Somehow you've got it in your head that synthetic oil causes leaks because the synthetic oil is leaking. This is just not the case on the 1.8T engine. Engines leak oil when they get old... 80k is not a new engine... given that most 1.8T's need a valve cover and cam adjuster seal set every ~40k miles, some leakage isn't abnormal.

Re: What seals?
I'm blowin oil through the turbo's internal seals. BUT, I owned two Supra Turbos and they blew Mobil1 by the turbo seals like crazy (and I owned them new). Also, my Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel docs are very specific about not using synthetic oil. AND, I don't put junk in anything!

Re: dino oil cokes badly in the K03/K04 turbos
Yeah, I've used synthetic in everything I've owned since 1987, exceptions being my Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel (Cummins says not to use synthetic) and the two Toyota Turbo Supras I had (again Toyota told me not to use synthetic as I was losing a quart in 500 miles just to leaks). The 1.8T has had nothing but synthetic, but the intercooler pipe has trace amounts of oil in it. Just wondering.

Seems to be a common things with the 1.8...
I always have a very light sheen of oil in the IC tubing. But I very very rarely have to add any oil between changes (5K miles). The last time that I did, it was when I was running some M1 0W40, had to add ~10 oz at 4K miles. I am running Rotella 5w40 syn and never have to add.

Re: Seems to be a common things with the 1.8...
Thanks. Like to hear those words. I am going to check the oil level to make sure it's not overfull. Last oil change, the top half of the plastic end to the dipstick tube went missing. Had it replaced yesterday so methinks I'll double check the oil level.
