which is unlikely if you have well-maintained engine, then the bypass valve would let unfiltered oil flow pass the filter material, and I don't like the sound of that.

Not sure what gas they used, but it was something non-explosive. ;-) The advantage was that the gas molecules were so big that the tires would lose only negligible amounts of pressure over time. Ideally, you didn't have to check your tire pressure all the time. Of course, without a tire pressure monitoring system you wouldn't know for sure. And each time you'd check the tire pressure, you'd lose some gas. Useless...
