96 A4 idle problem

My friend's 96 12v has a problem... when he starts the car and lets it idle to warm it up in the cold mornings, the engine will eventually (after a few minutes) drop the rpm to the point of stalling. The engine starts right up and works fine. Sometimes, whem the engine is warm, the idle will dip really low for a second, but won't really stall. Anyone heard of this before/
Thanks

1. After a cold start, do not idle the engine longer than 30 seconds, because an engine (and transmission!) will warm up much faster if driven right away. Letting the engine idle up to 30 seconds at very low temperatures is a good idea, but afer a couple hundred revolutions of the crankshaft, oil will have reached all bearings and further idling is actually less than ideal, especially due to fuel dilution, which is high as long as the engine is in the warm-up phase. Drive the car right away, but do not exceed 3k RPM until the oil is near operating temperature.
2. Dipping idle syndrome is usually caused by a dirty or defective ICV.
3. Stalling can also be caused by a defective coolant temperature sensor (affects air/fuel mix).
4. A less than pristine MAF can also cause dipping or rough idle.
