Default AAH VS AFC

Ok guys, trying to start a discussion here...

Is it just me or is the AAH the preferable engine when it comes to audi 12v engine tuning?

It has a higher compression ratio, better valvetrain, more aggressive camshafts, and a larger usable rev range (up to 6700 vs 6200 on AFC).

Why am I looking through scrapyards for an AFC when I could drop in an AAH?

Only downside I can think of is on ECU level (OBD-I vs OBD-II on AFC). Frankly I'm surprised the AAH makes the same power!

Default I'm not sure where you obtained your info, but my Bentley lists the following for both engines...

Max Horsepower: 172 at 5,500 RPM
Max Torque: 184 lbs-ft @ 3,000 RPM
Max RPM: 6,500
Compression Ratio: 10.3:1

You are correct re: the ECU. The AAH engine used MMS 300 system (OBD I compliant), while the AFC engine used MMS 311 and 400/411 systems (OBD-II compliant). The AAH engine after 8/94 is essentially the same as the AFC engine.

Default Audi's specifications are ballpark at best in many cases.

They often don't update specs when making changes that affect output.

Default The AFC has a lighter valve train with lighter valves and cams but a single spring setup.

This may account for the lower redline of the AFC as the lighter componets are also probably weaker.

The lighter valve train may also explain why it makes the same power as the AAH.

actually the lighter the valvetrain, the less float, the more revs they can handle

Default But the AFC's valve train componets are weaker so they can't handle as much revs...

If the AFC drive train was made from lighter materials that retains its strength than you are correct.
