Default Advice Sought: 2000 S4 or keep my 12V?

Hi All,

OK... just thought I'd try to get some advice. I love my 12V, but I have an opportunity to buy an Audi certified 2000 S4 w/44K miles for $27K. My 12V has 144K miles, but runs strong (esp. with the mods from this forum!)

I test drove the S4 and it's got great power, but I'd have to spend some money putting in Eibach springs, shocks and transferring my Neuspeed 19mm rear bar to make it handle like my 12V.

So the question is this: Should I hang-onto my 12V A4 knowing that I'll have tires and a clutch to do soon, or should I go for the S4?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Bob K.

Default It''s basically a personal decision.

If you had asked whether you should put your money into modding your 12V or buying the S4, the answer is simple...buy the S4.

However, you didn't ask that question...you asked whether you should buy the S4. This is an entirely personal question and it really comes down to your personal financial situation and what you value the most. If having a newer (and faster) car is important to you, then go for it. But if buying the S4 would stretch your funds a little thin, I'd wait on it.

Default I have been seeing lots of S4 involved in fatal accidents

Not to scare you from getting S4.

I used to have a toyota MR-2 turbo until I wrecked it real bad. I know that MR-2 is different from S4, but they share the same concept.... Sports car. When you have fast car, you'll tend to drive fast. I am sure 1999% that speed is the #1 reason why people get S4.

IMO,
more speed = more chance of wrecking ur car + more speeding ticket too.

Default Re: S4 has much more potential to make power than the 12V.

Plus there are many tuners out there offering a wide range of aftermarket parts, that simply bolt-on! ;O)

Default It all depends on the driver.

The car doesn't cause accidents; driver error does. The people who are killed in S4s would just as easily have been killed in a Jetta or Galant, because they'd still have driven beyond their abilities. A faster car doesn't make you drive like a jackass; people do that all on their own.

That's not to say all accidents are caused by people behaving like idiots. Blaming the car is a bit far-fetched, though.

Default if you are a daily driver for your audi, i would say you

keep your 12v..... 12v is really reliable and if you were to rebuild the engine, with moderate tech knowledge, it can be done.

Default That's a good point

However, it's a point that statistics can't prove or disprove. I know I would have probably been killed at least once had I still had my previous car instead of my much faster and better-handling A4. An S4 would have done even better in that situation.

People who like to drive like morons will drive like morons no matter what they drive. If only they'd stick to riding mowers in their own backyards. :-P

Default Any car is only as fast as your right foot allows

Granted, certain cars are more tempting to drive fast than others. But it really just comes down to a driver's self-discipline.
