Default Another good 5W-40 oil option for the 12v

This Shell (Pennzoil = part of SOPUS) oil meets the proper VW502 spec. Sulfated ash content is pretty low at ca 0.9% and that helps prolonging the life of emissions system components (O2 sensors and cats). HTHS = 3.9, which is very very good. This oil may resist blowby better than M1 5W-40. If you would like to reduce oil consumption, you may want to give this oil a shot. You can likely order a case at any Jiffy Lube place, should you have trouble finding it at your local auto parts place.

PENNZOIL ® PLATINUM SYNTHETIC EUROPEAN FORMULATION MOTOR OIL is a premium synthetic engine oil that is uniquely formulated to meet the needs of European automobiles.

PENNZOIL ® PLATINUM SYNTHETIC EUROPEAN FORMULATION MOTOR OIL is a low volatility oil that provides excellent high-temperature protection and low-temperature
protection. It resists high temperature oxidation
better than conventional oils.

APPLICATION

PENNZOIL ® PLATINUM SYNTHETIC EUROPEAN FORMULATION MOTOR OIL can be used in both passenger car and light duty diesel applications. It is specifically recommended for BMW and Porsche vehicles and where Mercedes-Benz 229.3, MB 229.1, VW 502.00, or VW 505.00 performance is required. PENNZOIL ® PLATINUM SYNTHETIC EUROPEAN FORMULATION MOTOR OIL surpasses the performance
requirements of API SL/CF, and ACEA A3/B4-02 and B3-98. PENNZOIL ® PLATINUM SYNTHETIC EUROPEAN
FORMULATION MOTOR OIL can be also be used for domestic vehicles where an API SJ, SH or API SG
category is recommended.

PENNZOIL ® PLATINUM SYNTHETIC EUROPEAN FORMULATION MOTOR OIL is only available in a SAE 5W-40 viscosity grade.

Default Red Line 5W-30

It's mostly for experimental reasons. ;-)

I'm not in favor switching oil brands and viscosities all the time. I can afford to do some experimenting, because I have used very few oils in my engine:

After the factory fill I used Castrol Syntec 5W-50 for over 100k miles. Then I tried M1 0W-40 and hated it due to noise and consumption issues. I used M1 5W-40 and liked it very much. In between the two runs with M1 5W-40, I used DELO 400 for a couple thousand miles. And now I'm using RL 5W-30, but will switch (due to cost!) to Pennzoil Platinum 5W-40 Synthetic European Formula.

That's pretty cheap! After I run out of the M1 I might try it.

Default How's consumption with that?

Here it appears to be strictly a mail-order item.
