Default Auxilary fan only turning on when A/C is on. Because of this, my engine is overheating when at idle

I'm guessing the fan control module is shot. Any idea on the price and is this a common thing failure?

Default It should not overheat if you use clutched fan. Check coolant...

make sure it is 50% coolant/50 water or max 60 coolant/40 water. I use 60/40 combination with the old (blue) coolant.

It could also be the water pump. Check those two (coolant and water pump).

If you don't turn on the A/C, the secondary will only turn on at mid point between normal middle point and overheat point (slightly to almost overheat point).

Default I checked my invoice

Electric fan not turning:

- 1 relay switch, $23.60

The part is most likely 100% marked up.

Sorry, I don't know how much they charged me for labor. The cost is hidden among other stuff.

Default Good point there - my fan clutch was bad, too!

So neither fan worked right.

1 fan clutch, $126! Jeez! :-(

Thanks, I'll check it out. I thought the auxilary fan turned on right when midpoint was passed.

Also, I didn't think clutch fan was strong enough to cool engine at idle.

Default Did you see the price for the fan clutch?

Maybe you should replace the clutch-driven fan with an electric fan. You'll lose less hp, and the electric fan will be quieter. UrS4 sells a nice-looking kit.

Default But don't count on the aux fan when it's idle.

At idle, when the temperature is reached (near overheating) the aux fan'll kick in BUT it'll only running very slow. So, don't count on it (it may be too late to cool your engine).

changing the clutched fan to EFK is better from my point of view (like moriboundman said).

Disadvantages of clutched fan:
1. VERY HARD to open (!**~!%##)^%@!!!!!!)
2. loss HP
3. You need to open more screws if you're changing the timing belt.

Clutched fan is enough with enough coolant, and make sure the clutch is not busted.

Did your car overheat because of the fan clutch?
