Based on my pics below, what's involved in replacing the oil pump? Special tools?
I looked at a diagram and it looks like the oil pump contacts the upper oil pan gasket. Can the pump be replaced without replacing the upper oil pan gasket?
The oil pump is expensive! I'd like to replace just the gasket but figured it would be safer to replace the pump and crank seal, too.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Well...
I've never replaced it, but I can tell you what the repair manual says:
- remove timing belt
- remove crankshaft sprocket
- remove lower oil pan
- remove TB tensioner, pulley, and lever
- remove idler pulley
- remove all oil pump mouting bolts
- remove oil pump housing
No special tools are mentioned. Looks like another weekend project!

Joy. That pump is $370, but better safe than sorry, I guess.
Might as well do the timing belt maintenance, too, I guess although I only have 43,000 miles on that stuff. I was planning on replacing it at 75k. The water pump looked good, no leaks. Don't know if I'll be able to afford both. With the engine mounts and crank seal I'll be looking at over $500 without the timing belt stuff. :-(

Thanks!
Damnit, I just relaized your instructions say to remove the lower oil pan. That one piece gasket is a bee-otch to deal with. I wonder if I can cut out the oil pickup cover part of the gasket and install them seperately. Hmmmmmm.

Re: Old.... That's the one. No chain on it. I thought the chain one is on the 30v?
Any experience with this project? Looks fairly simple but want to make sure there is nothing I'm overlooking.
Thanks!
Thanks!

where did you find that?
I suggest a google search buddy. I did that for my evap core and P/S rack and found places online that are way way cheaper than Impex, allgermanautoparts, autohausaz, etc. One place I picked up my evap core was Here
Just to help ya save a lil cashay Sounds like you're gonna have as much fun as me this weekend =P I'm starting a car repair fund this coming paycheck to start saving up for the inevitable! My CC is going on the fritz too! Starts flickering and flashing on the display. A quick whack on the side of the center console fixes the issue for the most part... haha. Not to mention the funny smoke on start-up, and the p/s rack. Labor of love for sure =P

I will put $$ down though that you'll be able to find it cheaper than $370 though. Hell, I got my rack for $15 more than that ... there's gotta be SOMEONE out there... haha
