High Temperature High Shear (HTHS) is an indicator how well an oil protects at an oil temperature of 150 degree C. VW/Audi specify an HTHS of 3.5 or higher for our engines.
If you got to the Mobil (or AMSOIL, or Red Line) site and check the oil specs, you will usually see HTHS listed.
Some new engines are designed for low HTHS oil. Using a low HTHS oil in an engine that requires a higher HTHS is a risky propostion, especially if you drive the car hard.
If you check the AMSOIL site, you will see their 10W-40 meets VW 501.01 and VW 505.00. If an oil meets those two VW specs it is also approved for the 2.8 according to my manual, but I prefer to go with a VW 502.00 spec oil. VW 502.00 requires friction modifiers.
Oil are a compromise, especially if they are designed to be "Energy Conserving", while they also must provide required wear protection at high temperature and high shear. A lower HTHS results in increased fuel savings.
If an oil is, for example, VW 502.00-approved, this oil will retain the required minimum HTHS during the specified drain interval, and thus provide adequate protection throughout its life.
