Default Whether you realize it or not you do have a cold air intake that's quite good. What you should do...

is search the archives using these words:
Mance XTB S3 MAF

Mance is well-known on these forums for making the best mods to your intake system that will give you more power and perhaps better mileage as well but first do let your fingers do some walking.
Lots of info. in the archives to discover!

Default Agreed...

After trying a couple different setups involving hot air sucking cone filters, etc, I'm back to using the stock airbox (with some modification). I wouldn't get the intake kit, but a K&N panel filter is a good start. (~$50)

Default Here are some figures on gas milage....................

6/4/2005 - 6/6/2005 - Drove round trip to Sparks, NV from Santa Ana, CA on US 395, the eastern Sierra's:
967 miles with an average of 26.1 MPG with a high of 27.73 MPG setting the Cruise Control around 70-75 MPH. That is better milage than when all those induction mods were first installed and
I got 24.6 MPG.
Equipment: Mance's Cold Air Induction System, S3 Velocity Stack,Stage 3 MAF, Stage 2 Hose Kit, XSTB, ported and polished IM.
Car: 1995 Sport 90 Quattro

Default What about putting in a K&N panel filter?

How do you think my gas mileage will be affected if I put a K&N Panel Air Filter in? Do you think it would improve or decrease?

Default More air = better gas milage (in most cases)

But, if you use 4AudiQ's numbers as a standard, you can see his MPG only increased ~3mpg (~55 miles/tank) with pretty much every induction mod available for these engines. Everyones car is different, as it will depend on your o2 sensors, etc, but I would expect only a small difference in mpg with only a K&N filter.

Default MSP to SEA = 24.8 to 26.6 mpg

mods
k&n
blausport tb
s3 hose kit - running a lean CEL
ported maf
ram air
bosch +4's

I had a record 28.5mpg before the s3
but attained a higher avg with the s3, 25mpg vs 23.5mpg.
