couple of questions on exhaust removal and drive flange seal replacement
Upon further inspection of the 100 I have found I need to replace two seals on the final drive-right side drive flange seal and main driveshaft seal.
For those who have replaced the right hand drive flange seal, does this look like enough space to do the work with out removing the exhaust? There is about a half inch between the down pipe and the bottom of the flange.

The big reason that I do not want to remove the exhaust, as Bently states, is because of this. This is the manifold to downpipe. My gut says not to touch this, soon as I put a wrench to this I am going to break the stud. I could soak this in liquid wrench for weeks and weeks and I still think this is going to crumble.

So my other question is if I do need to remove the exhaust and I do demolish the studs on the manifold, can I remove the exhaust manifold while the head is still on the engine?
My Final question is to repair the main driveshat seal, how much of the exhaust neeeds to be removed? Will removing the the cats allow enough room to repair the seal?

ex-manifold studs :- clean exposed thread [die nut] then heat the nut with an oxy torch, untighen, tighten, untighten a little at a time.

I'd say, remove axle assembly, then see if you need to remove exhaust to get at the seal....
Odd, as the B4 90 has a heat shield there to prevent the hot exhaust pipe from cooking the gearbox & CV flanges....
Is your exhaust OEM?
You can also remove the lower sub-frame, which will give you more room as well.

definitely worth trying...as far as I can tell from Bentley, there
is a heat shield on the left side only. The exhaust appears to be the original, not welds anywhere and leistritz cats. This seal was already replaced at 40K miles by Audi.
