Does anybody have opinions or experience with these (oil filter coolers)?

I read through all of the messages on a Porsche board about these and half say it is snake oil and the other half say they see 5 - 10 degree cooler oil temps.

https://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/1285318.phtml</a

The theory behind the heat-sink is simple... just increase surface area and you'll achieve greater efficiency in heat dissipation.
The problem is that our oil filter is in an area that is confined and has limited air flow... and, of course, it's oriented so that any air that DOES hit the heat sink will only move air past the fins on one side.
I'd say that the heat sink might have very limited affect on cooling the oil. You would probably be far better off getting an adaptor between the oil filter and the oil filter mount to redirect oil to another radiator that you could locate in front of the radiator.

Just thinking this would provide some additional cooling. I'm also in the process of relocating the filter, so some of the limitations that you mention are not true in my case.
I might give it a shot just to see how it works.
Thanks for the response.

Im looking into getting a "radiator" type oil cooler now. Recently, my oil temp has been hanging around 100 degrees C, not where I would like it to be. As you can see, I have planty of room for a front mount oil cooler. ;-)

Also, where did you jump into a line from? Ive been thinking about it all day and cant seem to think of an oil line up front.

It's a little small, but I got a good deal on it. The hardest part for me was making the mounting brackets because I didn't really have any metal working tools.
I'm re-working it now to add a thermostat and relocate the filter. If you haven't worked with oil lines and fittings, I would suggest picking up a copy of Carroll Smith's "Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners, and Plumbing Handbook." I went with all Aeroquip fittings; they are a little more expensive, but they were reccomended. I bought most of the parts from summitracing.com, but bought the cooler directly from Setrab USA.
You can check it out before MidOhio.

Does it offer any cooling? Sure. But is it a "measurable" amount? Absolutely not. We surmised it did cool but that we couldn't see even 1 degree temp drop on our 270 degree full-sweep, certified oil temp gauges.
Yet part of the heat thats being dissapated by the filter-wraps doesnt even originate as oil temps. It is block temps migrating thru the screw-on hollow stud that the oil filter screws on. Engine/block heat migrates thru that piece and heats up anything connected to it. Later when we blocked off our spin-on oil filter and relocated the filter to a remote location we left a filter (with no oil going thru it) and the finned heat sink on and it still got hot to the touch via transmitted (conductive) heat thru it's mounting stud as well as proximity heat, ie; heat sources nearby thru radiation/reflective sources.
No harm can be done using one of these but I doubt much good comes from it either. And as far as protection goes I've never known my 2.8 filter cannsister to get blasted by dirt or grit between oil changes. In fact due to it's surrounded and protected location I dunno if thats even possible even without the plastic pan. I've never encountered a punctured oil filter either. But if one feels it does offer better protection then by all means buy one and use it for that. But don't expect your oil temp gauge to move one speck off it's current location. But hell it's only 20 bucks, try it. 20 years ago no one coulda talked me out of it either. But 20 years ago it was only 4 bucks and you could have any color you wanted... long as it was black anodized.

And the guys on the Porsche list that was linked in the original post were actually saying that the thermal properties of the black anodized ones were actually superior to the other colors.
I can't believe that such differences would be measurable, but they said there was a theoretical difference between the colors...so maybe the guys 20 years ago knew what they were talking about!

The part between the filter and cooler where you tapped the lines, did it come with radiator or is it custom made....how much aproximately was it all?
thanks
