Got the Velocity Stack today! Impressions...
I received the velocity stack today! I got it around 4:00 pm. Thank goodness I was home "sick" today! This gave me a new project to play with.
It took me about 1.5 hours to put this in... but I was taking my time with the install. You'll definitely want a heat gun to do this install. This will help to soften the airbox wall so you can clearance it by pushing it out. I used a Dremel to remove one rib from the inside of the airbox housing. (I love to use that Dremel!) I also used a small rubber mallet to help seat the velocity stack.
UrS4 advised me that I should wait about 50 miles to let the ECU adjust, but I thought I'd post my impressions after the first 12 miles since I feel a difference already. Things I've noticed:
1) Engine was warm from my driving home in the afternoon. Usually the engine will settle into an idle of about 700 rpm. After installing the velocity stack, the engine idle was at 1100 rpm and adjusted itself back to 700 rpm after about 5 minutes. This is a good indication that I'm getting more air.
2) As I was driving around and got to the 10 mile mark, I could feel that the car was pulling a little harder on the top end.
3) At the 12 mile mark, I decided to do a quick blast from 0-60 on Pacific Coast Highwya. First, I have to say that I have NEVER (ever!) "beaten my tachometer" in the Audi. But now the engine seems to rev so freely that I found that I'm hitting the rev limiter in 1st gear when the tach is only reading 5800 rpm! Interesting!
4) The engine feels much smoother and revs much more freely than it did before. I'm impressed at how much smoother and easier this makes heel-and-toe downshifting.
Overall, I'd say that this mod is a definite and highly recommended improvement! Anything that yields a "seat of the pants" improvement has to be worth at least 5 horses.
BTW, I just put in my order for a 2004 S4. I wonder if these velocity stacks will work for the 4.2 liter airbox as well? ;-)
