Default H-pipe

I was watching some redneck tuning on TNN and they were installing a H-pipe on a ummmmm..a mustang. It was basically a perpendicular pipe connecting the right and left exhaust banks in front of the cats. Whats is its purpose and would it help us???
peace,
keith

Default It's a balance pipe

What's is used for is to balance the exhaust pulses between the left and right cylinder banks. It is proven to actually help horsepower and torque.

There are two variations available now for high performance cars: The H-Pipe (because it looks like an "H") and an X-Pipe (same reason). They both perform well, though the X-pipe tends to scavenge exhaust pulses better (because exhaust gases don't have to make a 90 degree turn to run into the balance pipe.)

As for our Audis... I looked into this and I don't know how much it'll help us... at least not on the A4. Our exhaust merge at the resonator so installing an H or X pipe and having the pipe merge another 2 feet later may not yield huge improvements on a stock exhaust. BUT if you're changing out your exhaust anyway, why not add it? It couldn't hurt and very well may help.

Default Re: It's a balance pipe

Hmm, i read something about the hp gain.
The reason is: the emmission will make a barrier on the other cylinders - the motor can fill much better, cause the emmision will go through this X or H pipe and block the new fresh air-gas mixture or so (after the valves )... hmm, my english is 2 bad for explaining. I think, it can flow to fast without this H or X pipe, so the old emmission will stop that.
I hope u know what i mean ( only a little bit ). If not, ill read again my book about tuning, there was the article about that H or X pipe-tuning. By the way, it wouldnt bring u to much hp!!!
