it's a '96 A4 2.8QM. The warm air only comes out of the center vents. Thankfully it's been cool enough these past few months to go without the A/C and I don't drive as much as I soon will be in the upcoming months to need the heater. I just wanted some opinions before I took my car to a shop and have it checked out. Evap core? If so, what costs am I expecting? Thanks for the help.

go dive the car and "have the AC on". After a bit open the hood and check out the Al AC lines on the passenger side? Can't remember, i got a 90, and one should be hot to the touch and the other pretty cold. If not then a real problem with the system. Also by the fire wall, the driver side heater hose should be very hot, directly form engine, and the other right/passenger side should be a little cooler but still warm. If both of these seem correct then the flaps that control the type of air being pushed out at you are failed or failing and you are say stuck at "warm air" setting

on mine, the air only blows out of the 'face' vents, any suggestions? defrost is nonexistent

That was the problem with mine.

Also make sure the heater core is not clogged.

Oh and that your HVAC is sending a signal to turn on the AC compressor.
