Default Hey Mori, had a quick question on install procedures for tie rods, going to install the

BAW tie rods tomorrow.

Did you use a tie rod end puller to disconnect the tie rod end to hub? You have any other advice that might make the install easier? =) I allready got the liquid wrench and have sprayed the old ones and will be sitting over night.

Default No special tool is required

The tie rod end is only connected to the tie rod and and the steering knuckle. You only have to loosen the tie rod end jam nut (Don't back it off), the bolt on top of the steering knuckle and the pinch bolt and nut next to it. One you have removed the two bolt and the one nut, the tie rod can easily be pulled out of the steering knuckle.

Replace the bolt, the pinch bolt, and the nut. They got some dry thread locker applied to the threads.

In my case, the tie rod end was stuck real good to the tie rod. The threads were really corroded, and I had to let the threads soak in Liquid Wrench for a day.

Default Good to hear.

I know my dad used that tool the one time he changed his tie rods so was wondering if I needed it. Thanks for your help.

Default No pickle fork needed! :D

I'm trying to find the part numbers for the nuts and bolts, but I can't find the invoice right now...

Default I used a caliper to measure the distance between the nut & tie rod end

so that when I installed the new ones, they would be as close as possible to the original measurements. I came within 1mm on both sides, & my alignment has been fine. FYI: I used the tech article here on AW as a guide. Pretty decent write up IMO. Are you going with the heavy duty ones, or regular?

Tech Article

Default BTW, be sure to tighten your lug bolts on the wheel before going on your test drive.

I forgot to tighten them all the way in excitement. Luckily I noticed it about 1/4 mi. away from getting on the interstate on-ramp. I've never felt so stupid in my life than that day. Doh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Default Pickle fork needed?

When I did mine, I used a pickle fork, but I already had one lying around from the days when I had an Alfa Spider - as I recall it had SIX tie rod ends! Tie rod removal from the steering knuckle on the Audi was instant using this tool, perhaps it's overkill, but might be necessary if you live in the rustbelt like I do.

Default What's that "rust" of which you speak?

It's funny, while the tie rod end came out of the steering knuckle without any effort, I had to put up a major fight to unscrew the tie rod ends from the tie rods. And I'm not a weakling! Or maybe I've become one. :-\ I can see how a lot of rust could be a problem. Inserting a piece of steel tubing or similar into the steering knuckle and a driving the tie rod end out with a hammer should work, too, if no pickle fork is available.
