Default Hey Mori-is-the-oil-guy... whats the lowdown on the new-ish Castrol Edge...

Saw a TV commercial this weekend with some annoying little Scotsman running around in it swatting peoples butts with a dipstick. Commercial boasts "over 8X the wear protection of Mobil 1"

While I don't know much about oils I do know there's more to them than "just" wear protection but I don't know where/when "wear protection" leaves off and other properties take over in the overall scheme of things.

So how about some of your views related to this oil as compared to your current list of recommendations? No hurry as I'm not about to switch oils based on a TV ad that sounds eerily akin to a Slick 50 commercial of yester-year!

Default I'm thinking with my dipstick!

First Valvoline claimed 4x better wear protection than Mobil 1. Now Castrol tops that by claiming 8x less wear (When? In stop&go traffic, at cruising speed, or at high speed?). I do believe all companies will exaggerate the positive qualities of their products. I think Castrol Edge's claim to superiority by a factor of 8 is nothing but ad speak and not to be taken seriously.

I'll see if I can dig up the actual specs of Castrol Edge.

Default Some info:

Castrol doesn't reveal the relevant specs that interest me most:

- HTHS
- sulphated ash content
- evaporative loss

Castrol Edge specs (PDF)

This oil does not meet ACEA A3 and does not have the minimum HTHS of =/>3.5 that Audi mandates in the 12v engine. The HTHS of Castrol Edge is likely </= 3.2.

I'd stick with an ACEA A3 or VW 502 or 505.01 oil.

With my (apparently) leaking head gasket, I'm using Rotella-T 5w-40 to save $$. Seems solid.
