After 6500 miles and approximately 3 quarts consumption it was pennzoil that has left a smile on my face and made me think how faithful this oil is. now that i am in seattle and i am new i can not find any place selling the pennzoil 5w40. i found few lube shops however they dont want to sell it to me. Why? Why? Why? i am gonna pay but they just want me give them a fortune so they can fill my engine with pennzoil. i could easily get it in michigan. Any place in seattle guys? Let me know! so i ended up getting this oil called "76 Lubricants" 5w40 pure synthetic oil (trademarks of ConocoPhillips). Any of u using it?
I got the MSDS for it. numbers seem close to pennzoil's. What do you think Mori?

I can almost guarantee you they'll bend over backwards to get you what you want. I've talked to a couple of different reps, both Mobil and Castrol and they were extremely eager to please.
It's worth a shot.

Never seen it, but heard of it. Specs look good and it meets VW 502. It's almost certainly a hydrocracked mineral oil, but don't let that deter you from using it. It should be good for at least 5,000-7,500 miles. There's only one way of finding out how it affects oil consumption. ;-)

I just put it in. :-P
Valvoline is generally being snubbed by many for its lack of a stout anti-wear additive pack. I'm not sure more is necessarily better. Valvoline 5W-40 meets not only VW 502 and VW 505, but also the PD diesel spec VW 505.01. This is a serious plus in my book, because an API SM (fairly low ash spec) oil may not be ideal for non-rollerized valve trains, but the VW 505.01 spec is all about minimizing wear and deposits in the valve train (of the highly stressed PD diesel engine). After 8k miles I will have a UOA done to see how this oil compares.
Valvoline 5W-40 is likely a hydrocracked mineral oil. There are, to my best knowledge, no full synthetic VW 505.01 rated oils.
Valvoline has been popular with VW mechanics for decades. Ashland also runs one of the most modern oil and engine testing facilities in the world.

I do like the 5w-40, my consumption has stayed around 1/3-1/2 qt. per 1k miles. I might do the oil analysis from Blackburn(?) soon.

Order a free oil sample kit from Blackstone (If you can't find them, send me an email). I recommend you get the optional Terry Dyson analysis, which you can add to your order when you send the oil sample in.
1/3to 1/2 quart oil per 1k miles is not that bad. At least the oil gets replenished on a regular basis. ;-)
