I had suspected a bad thermostat because my temperature is always hot and the radiator rarely is. I had to hook up a little switch to the thermoswitch so that I could turn it on and leave it on while in traffic (which has worked pretty well), but is only treating the symptom. Still not sure of source. I'm up for suggestions on this BTW. Thermoswitch was replaced when I did the timing belt last spring (1.5 years ago or so).
I've purchased some SuperFlush (two, actually) to try to clean out the system, but disposing of coolant is difficult (no, down the toilet is not an option!).
Anyway, any thoughts are welcome.
Back to the subject... I had to loosen the TB, but afterwards, I successfully got that thermostat housing off without too much frustration. It is definitely easier if the power steering pulley is 'pullied' off, but possibly doable with it still on.
It all went together pretty well. I swear I could do a TB job in an hour and a half. (I also don't have to remove the entire front end - '92 100cs.) I also changed out my coolant overflow reservoir, serp belt update, diagnosed my power steering fluid loss (pump is leaking), changed out a broken piece of plastic, and loosened my TB ('whirring' noise previously - for a 1.5 years now...).
Oh, and, after three years of owning my car now, I finally replaced my broken ignition switch. I also bought new fancy screws for the under try (sound damper). Now I just need to steam clean my entire engine bay 'cause it is soooo dirty now that that stupid tray has been off forever.

I tried once to R&R my thermostat, without removing the TB, but my thermostat decided to get stuck inside its housing....
Now adays, I change the thermo when the timing belt, waterpump, and rollers get changed at their 60,000 mile mark. ;O)

long time to fiddle around it, perhaps my TB was not as tight as yours in the first place.
I remember it was big PITA.
My thermostat when it died, it compleatly broke into 2 pieces and was fully open. In the summer it was no big deal but as soon as the weather got close to freezing I kept getting CEL that my engine could not warm up in specified time.
