My two original converters died this summer. I figured it was probably just there time since there was 128000 miles on the car, 12v a4. Since then I have replaced them with a setup I read about on here that just joins the two exhaust banks and uses one 3in. in/out Magniflow cat. Since then that cat died, it broke down on the highway around 1500-2000 miles later. When that cat went I just blew out the cat was not running one till I could get it fixed. The funny part though is that while running the car with no cat, I never received a check engine light and i was driving the car for over 600 miles, I also just replaced all 4 o2 sensors this summer. So I really have no idea what is killing the cats, it seems on the last cat I had a little build up in honeycomb but I can't figure out what is causing this. Any idea's would be greatly appreciated. Thanks .

If there black it sounds like your car could be running rich? If your car runs to rich your cats wont last long. This is a problem I had with my car. My cats where bad I replaced them and not three days later they went bad again. This is something the standered five year warrenty wont cover. Fix the problem before replacing the cats other wise you will be replacing them again.

I got it replaced for free, but i don't want it to happen again. I do have black in my tail pipes. Any ideas on how to fix the running rich problem? I'm thinking it is possibly my MAF? I have been sporadically having problems idling. Thanks again, Robb

He should check first the cheapest things. Like his coolant temp sensor.
The MAF I think he can check if its operating properly by checking it for voltage?
My running rich problem was caused by my T-stat not opening.
Also to clean that MAF sensor get a can of that electronic parts cleaner. Its like a can of moist air? I think its called CRC? You can find it at Home Depot or a place like that.
Lastly what is your Miles/gallon like and does your car get heat in the cabin in the summer when its cold out. I drive 20 minuts to work and before I replaced the t-stat my car would get mildly very mildly warm inside. Good thing for the heated seats. A heated steering wheel would have been great.

I'd think about the thermostat if it hasn't been done with the timing belt - thermostat failure is why I had to do the timing belt prematurely on my car.
