A solvent alone doesn't cut it, and here is why:

While a solvent may losen some crap, as soon as the solvent vaporizes, which it quickly will, the dirt is again being deposited. Deposits have to be suspended in the oil in roder to be removed. That's what HDEOs do pretty well due to superior detergency and soot loading capacity.
