Default IM Workshop: MAJOR UPDATE for all interested. HUGE DISCOVERY!!

Just so you guys don't think I never listen or that I summarily dimiss most everything you say I'd like to point out a VERY significant discovery just now courtesy of our own JWG right here at 12V Development.

Two posts down John asked if there was any way to grind off the back of the welds on the butterflies to help in getting them off without breaking the heads off. I didn't think (from memory) that it was possible but I just went out to the garage, reinserted my butterfly shafts, laid one of the butterfly plates on the shaft within each bore. I was amazed to see that with the right, small diameter bur it absolutely could be done! Then with a VERY thin carbide flame-point bur, I found out that it's not only possible but actually very easy with the right grinding bur and some xtra, extra-careful, close-quarter work.

It also appears tho I can't confirm that once these little welding tablets are ground down that it's very likely the butterfly retaining screws could then be removed with a #1 Phillips screwdriver from the top of the butterfliy plate/shaft. I cant confirm this due to mine are all missing (broken off intentionally) and I don't know if and /or how far any welding might have migrated sub-surface. But my gut-instinct after looking at the two I did this on is that the screws will loosen once the little weld-tablets are ground flush with the shaft.

If so this is a HELLUVA find for everyone that would like to do their secondary runners and butterfly secondary inlets.

I'm gape-jawed that this slipped by me or fell thru the cracks as an option when I was removing all my butterfly plates. I was ALL OVER that damn thing trying to find a way. Just shows to go ya two heads are indeed better than one.

Thanks John! You duh MAN!!

Default I will keep that in mind when I do mine, although I'm completely lost on this...

will follow more in due time when I have time and a garage to do this in!

Default I keep wondering WHY you inisist on having a garage to do this...

Due to the cold last week I moved all my grinding tools in from the garage and have been sharing this project between the kitchen counter and the dining room table. If you can find an 18"x24" workspace you're good to go!

I just put newspaper down in case I have to go to the bathroom. Ok just to catch the grinding dust. Seriously would you also need a garage to empty the crumb tray in a toaster? This takes no more room than that. Long as you have a counter, dining table, cocktail table or an end table you have a workspace. Just do it! ;-)

Default I wonder what my neighbor would say if I were to start grinding in my kitchen

Especially, since I recently sent him a postcard that said "I hear you have a new girlfriend and would like to congratulate you!" "Hear" should be taken quite literally in this context. ;-) :-P

Default few things in life as rewarding as verbally enthusiastic women...

few things less rewarding than a verbally abusive one.

If die grinders were so loud that neighbors could hear them from inside our homes none of us would be using them. If mine was as as loud as your neighbors girlfriend I'd never leave the house!! <EG>

No louder than the average hair dryer. True!

Default I guess I never actually understood the original problem.

I assumed that the issue wasn't getting the screws out, but rather getting them back in securely. I assume that by taking them out as described above, we would just screw them back in once we were all done? If this is the case, isn't there some concern that they would wiggle themselves loose given that they are so small (in other words, why did Audi weld them in the first place)?
