Mance's Recovery Sleeve is designed and machined to allow maximum flow with no protrusions, i.e. breather hose barbs, in the airflow path. As Mance also mentioned in this thread below it is also key to emissions inspection/testing. Without connecting the hoses back to the intake tract you would be venting the crankcase to the atmosphere which is not so environmentally friendly.
If you plan to replace the stock accordion tubing and plastic plenum with silicone tubing you will want one of these. Some have done DIY "sleeves", however IMO you will be very pleased with Mance's rendition. It's been thoroughly tested for the best possible results.
I already have one of these on my B4 90Q and the car runs awesome, I'm in on the GB to have a spare or in case I finally give in and buy the wife an Avant. The Ford Escape I bought her a few years ago sucks so she might get her wish.
