Mance what kind of clutch will you be putting in with the new engine?

in N/A cars at 6k ft altitude. I'm trying to get a "one-off" Borg & Beck pressure plate and disc assembly made in the U.K. for the new motor. And still debating if I want to go with a CGR (RS2) 6speed tranny with the hard/wide first gear. Should have kept the one in my UrS4 when I sold it.

the earlier RS2 trannies and the later UrS4 5 speeds had some problems with breaking teeth off the 1st gear pinion due to torque off the line. The CGR transmissions corrected this by making the cog surface of 1st gear 50% wider and had it case hardened to prevent the teeth from breaking off when pulling away hard from a stop. This way it spread its torque load over a larger/harder surface area.
Not that I'd mind a taller first gear mind you. I'd love a first gear that would pull to 50mph and have 2nd-thru-6th be good for 50-150mph. Thats how my old SCCA Datsun ultra-close ratio trannies were and I LOVED them!! But just thought you should know about the "wide/hard" gear I was referring to.

I remember when I went to the only autox iv been to so far down shifting in two first or second gear was very rough even when matching the revs. But like I said it was my first autox.

where the racing starts. First gear is too short for any use at all in road racing. Even my UrS4 which had one of the bad trannies never lost it's first gear as I dont do anything racey in first gear. I never dump the clutch or downshift to first. Brakes are cheap, clutches, synchros and trannies are spendy.
I'm fine with a 5 speed but I could really use the 4, 5 & 6 ratios of the 6speed for some road courses that are an hour or three away that I'd like to play at next summer.

You have driven a 6 and a 5 speed tranny for these cars correct. What are your opinions is the extra gear worth it for just us daily Auto crossers. Even on the highway cruising to work and from work at 80 mph I sometimes wish I had a sixth gear.

other people had told me that the 6spd's were geared exactly the same as 5's, with the exception of a 6th gear. So when I read your post about "wider 1st" it threw me off... cause I had also heard that there was a 6sp tranny with a taller 1st (& maybe 2nd.) Read about it in 80/90
thanks Mance. breaking tranny gears is no good
check yah later
