clutch farely soon, I am sort of curious if anyone knew what this "whinning" may be. I can only hear it in the first gear but the car drives perfect and there is absolutely nothing pointing at any serious damage to tranny. All shifts fine and etc. The sound appeared about two years ago, but since first gear is not often used and the potential price of getting the tranny looked at is not appealing to me, I kinda left it alone and kept on driving. Since the tranny will be out of the car for the clutch install, I thought that I might as well get this looked at. Someone said that it could be a balancer on the first gear that offset, but since my knowledge of transmitions is very basic I thought I'd ask you guys, especially since some may have already had a similar experience. So, please let me know if you have any sugestions on this little problem.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I've heard a high-pitched "spooling-up turbine noise"(for lack of a better description) on all my VW cars and my Audi. If that's what you hear, then you shouldn't worry.
My first gear has actually been a tad noisy for the past 60k miles. Sounds like some teeth may be chipped. It's not getting worse, though.
PS: Why will they remove the tranny to replace the clutch?

to replace the clutch, or atleast thats what I heard. Its a 97 A4 2.8Q and from what I know whole lot of things need to be taken off to get to the clutch, thats why its so costly.

Both my Sciroccos, and my Corrado have made the turbine sound in first gear. The A4 does it, too.
I wasn't thinking straight. Of course, the tranny has to come out to get to the clutch.

what i pretty much experience is the same as you only a little more pronounced. From my somewhat limited knowledge of transmissions is that there might be a chip or nick in the syncros or gear. But that's just from talking to other folks, etc...
My tranny will most likely be torn apart in the next week (on an unrelated issue) or so, that'll give me good idea of what's goin on with that and I'll let you know...
