Default Mobil is changing their lineup

Mobil is now markteting "Mobil 1 Extended Performance" oil. Quote from the Mobil site:

Mobil 1® Extended Performance is a new high-endurance motor oil with 36 percent more anti-wear additives and 37 percent more cleaning agents than current Mobil 1 formulations. It is a fully synthetic formulation that helps extend engine life, reduce oil breakdown and minimize engine wear -- all while helping to keep your engine clean. Improvements that add up to exceptional protection for 15,000 miles. Guaranteed.

Interesting for us will be their two A3-rated oils:

- Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10W-40
- Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15W-50 (The old/current version will be discontinued)

M1 Extended Performance

Default You forgot to mention something...

"50 percent more SuperSyn" ;O)

I wonder why Mobil's elevating the levels so much?

The older oils did just fine...

Default SuperSyn is just PAO plus additives

More proprietary additives and possibly better base stock mean the oil will last longer. The high additive content also means that these oils cannot meet the fuel savings and performance requirement of ILSAC GF-4. Some Mobil oils, most notably 0W-40 and Delvac 1, are already suitable for extended drain.

By the way, I'll have a UOA on the M1 5W-40 done. That oil has 8k miles on it, and I want to know how it's holding up.

Default do you foresee this altering your recommendation?

I have had no problems using 5w40 M1 thus far. I had about 6k on the first batch and I'm about 1k into this one.

Default No

In case I don't like the results of the UOA I may pick some other oil.

Default Re: You forgot to mention something...

getting a PHD in industrial Chemistry, running an oxidative test on these oils will help you understand how long oils will last. I use Differential scanning calorimetry to determine breakdown of these oil, synthetics are vary stable, mineral bases oils are good to ( just do not used off brands) ex , like, shell or murrys junk ) they barly make the cut. if you use diesel oil like 15w 40, it will break down to quick in your audi, because diesel oil has alot more additivs than regular oil thus making the breakdown quicker. will update you on 2005 oils soon, will be testing more conventional oils , and synthetics.
