Default Need advice on camshaft sprocket & CV joint

First off, I need to change my damaged timing belt & finally got some timing belt covers to put on. My questions are:

(1) Is there any danger or anything in particular I need to know about removing the camshaft sprockets so that I can install the rear t-belt covers? I would like to get it back on in the proper position so that I have a car that works when I'm all finished.

(2) What size/type puller will I need to remove the sprockets with?

(3) Since I'll have the sprockets off already, I want to change the front engine seals too, if possible. Can I just pull them out or do I have to remove the valve covers?

The next event is the driver's side CV joint. It started to make it's clicking sound this weekend, so I suppose I need to replace it & the boot. I know absolutely nothing about suspension work.

(4) Is there a tech article for this?

(5) What special tools are needed?

(6) How long will it take?

(7) Should I even try to tackle this project or just let the pros do it?

(8) How long will the joint last before going kerplunk, & what happens when it does? Will I crash?

All advice on both of these issues is greatly needed & appreciated. Thanks in advance gentlemen!

Default i have always let a mechanic do the joints

its relatively cheap. im not sure if its audi's front trak system or what, but my joints need replacing almost yearly.

Default The joints are the easy part....

I wouldnt mess w/ the cam sprocket unless your confident. You wont into timing problems by doing a CV joint.

I take it your working on an A4.

Before you take the wheel off, slightly jack the side up your working on and pull off the center cap of the wheel, theres a collar bolt in there youll need to loosen now, its big and I forget the size (maybe 22mm). Take the wheel off and undo the upper control arms, dont beat the hell out of that long bolt by the way.
Its easier to take the whole shaft out to work on so remove the 6 allen bolts that bolt the inner end of the shaft in. From there take out the collar bolt and you should be able to pull the shaft out.

Put that collar bolt back into the end of the CV joint and tighten it back down, itll pop the joint right over the ring. From there, its cake work. The hardest part may be smashing the new joint over the ring on the shaft.

Oh, and youll have to tend to the new boots and stuff.
