Default need a favor of someone who has time.....

tell me the exact part number of your instrument cluster on your A4. I would assume all 96's are the same, but I look on ETKA and their are 3 different versions, plus Canadian versions.

Who knows a lot about these clusters? Can I put a 98 in my 96 seeing that it would be newer, hopefully less mileage on it?

Default I know of two cluster makers: VDO and Nippon Seiki

My '96 has the VDO cluster with the Mini-Check system, but I don't have the part number. I've had teh cluster out, but I don't recall how many plugs there were on the back.

My repair manual shows that the cluster with the FIS display (trip computer etc) has two big plugs and one slightly smaller one.

I don't know if that helps at all. :-\

Default It would seem to me that if you got one with the same part # as the one you already have than

it should work.

But that would make sense. :-/

Do you need me to look anything up in ETKA?

Default got ETKA open here, the three years match, but i have a Nippon gauge cluster...

I think they only came on the 96-97 models. I've read you can switch from the Nippon model to the VDO model which is better I guess, but don't know what the visual differences are.

Default It says VDO in tiny letters between the gauges

The Nippon Seiki uses little red rubber condoms on the bulbs, the VDO doesn't. I don't know if the VDO and Seiki clusters are otherwise identical. I would think they are the same, as long as neither one has the trip computer. I'll see if I can find a picture.
