As from the VAG self study programme No.128. on the Audi V6 engine that landed in my lap via ebay.

Quote:

"Development of high torque in the low speed range requires a long intake manifold with small cross sectional size.

For high power output in the high speed range a short intake manifold with large cross section size is required.

The former compromise, a medium length intake manifold with medium cross section size, is replaced by this switchover intake manifold.

Switchover flaps for each cylinder in the SWITCH OVER INTAKE MANIFOLD are opened by MPI at an engine speed above 4100 rpm to shorten the intake passages.

Switchover flaps are always closed in neutral position and when speed is less than 4100 rpm.

In this manner there is strong torque in the low speed range and sufficient power output in the high speed range."
