There is a lot of work involved: You need to remove both halves of the oil pan, the ribbed belt and the timing belt. Then you have to remove the crankshaft timing belt sprocket and then you can remove the oil pump.
If you have to replace the timing belt soon, it is not that much more work.

I was told on a 2.8 AFC 1995 Audi 90 Quattro that you didn't need to remove the upper oil pan just the lower oil pan and then there is 5 bolts holding the oil pump from underneath the oil pan. Correct me if I'm wrong because I need to change my oil pump also.

I pulled upper and lower pans as well as oil pump a few years ago (see thread below)but I can't remember if I had to pull upper oil pan to get oil pump off since I was already pulling the upper pan. Turned out the major leak was coming from the crank seal. I had done all the oil pan work without having to. But did stop some other monor leaks. I believe that cold oil had pushed crank seal out of place. I was using 15W50 and weather was about 8 degree F. Good luck it is a lot of work.

It is beginning to come back to me. As I recall you can remove the oil pump with out removing the upper oil pan because I believe that once the lower pan is removed you can get to bolts into bottom of oil pump. However,as I recall, the bottom of the oil pump shares the upper oil pan to block gasket. So if damaged, you would have to pull the upper pan. Suggest checking the crank seal first before committing on oil pans. (Again see thread on my prior reply) Hope this helps, again this is all from memory almost 4 years ago.

Thanks, I scored a Audi Oem Oil Pump new for $115.00 stamped Audi right on the casting. I know a good fellow told me to remove the Radiator to get room for the crank Puller. He said thats one hardest things to do is to remove the radiator bolts. I'm working on a 95 Quattro sport AFC 2.8L
