Default Pardon my ignorance but .......

What exactly are the benefits of the MAF modding? Does it actuly increase air flow? I see that everyone is getting on this MAF modding band wagon and I don't want to be left behind!
I already have a K&N panel filter and this is what I've done with the stock configuration on the air box.

I have removed the snorkel on the top of the air box and left the front induction hose in place as these pictures show.

This did wonders for the airflow over stock but would modding the MAF increase my airflow in this configuration or do I have to run a cone filter?
I'm also running a magnaflow exhaust with stock cats and stock resonator. Is modding the MAF a good place to start or is it not even worth it in my case? I'm not looking to make this car a land rocket but I would like it to perform as well as I can make it with some mild mods (no internal mods, ie TDL 260 conversion).

TIA

Jason

That probably hurt because you lost the positive pressure the stock box will produce at speed.

Default What JustDave said and you'll also be pulling in hot air from your engine bay instead of the cooler

air from the stock inlet behind the grill.

Buy one of UrS4's aluminum MAF inlet Velocity Stacks and remove your MAF screen.

Default

it seems to run much smoother at 3-5k rpms than it does with the snorkel inplace

Default I tend to agree with Dave, there is positive pressure created from the grill scoup, so my guess is

that it should actually hurt performance.

Default Ok, so you guys convinced me

to go back to the stock configuration, But what should I do about the MAF mods? What would work with my set up? I know you guys know a lot more about this than I do, thats why I'm asking. With only a K&N panel and a Magnaflow with stock piping, what would you do next?

TIA
Jason

PS, I'm not made of money

Default Remove the MAF screen and get a MAF inlet

I have one steel one left ($25 shipped) or you can buy an aluminum velocity stack from UrS4 ($45). It just pushes into your MAF inlet inside the airbox lid. The one I have left does not require any modification to install. UrS4's will require a heat gun and possibly a dremel. I did not need the dremel to install mine. By the way the extra steel one I have was made by UrS4. The inlet will speed up the airflow into the MAF and also prevents a CEL and rough idle from removing the MAF screen. There is more info on this if you read previous posts.

UrS4 is also working on a bored MAF and MAF to Throttle Body tube which elements the stock TB plenum and provides a more direct, smoother flow of air into the throttle body.

Also consider UrS4's sleeved throttle body. It is worth it! (however it is pricy) I have noticed a great improvement in acceleration especially over 3800 RPM. There is a lot more info on these mods in previous posts or you can email UrS4 directly for more info.

Many people have gone the custom exhaust route with the magneflow's. You can get your stock piping replaced with a larger diameter fairly inexpensivably at a custom exhaust shop. Also consider high flow cats. I am currently still running the stock exhaust but will upgrade eventually.

Good Luck!

Default Any down side to removing the MAF screen and running a velocity stack?

it sounds like a good idea to me.

Many thanks to all of you.

Default No. Acheives the same goal with less restriction. The only thing I've noticied is a slightly

louder induction noise coming from the air box.

One other thing I've considered is covering the airbox with heat shielding to further decrease induction temperatures. All in good time. =)
