I have gotten different part numbers, does anyone know the latest one? The original one has the "usual" (at least for this car) cracking starting, noticed it while I changed the antifreeze. Might as well fix it before it breaks.

the expansion tank has been updated. It is now has a blue top cap. I got the tank from thepartsbin.com and I bought the cap from dealer since the parts bin didn't sell the cap.

G12 wasnt made to use in the 12v, only in the newer cars. It is safe to use in the older cars and alot of us do including myself because it is good stuff.
There hasnt been a part supersession on this tank at all, old number is still the new number.
Do you have the old number?

The original '96 part number for the tank has been superceded with an updated one ( I don't know when it started). The new tank uses a different cap, regardless of color. Regardless where you buy it, you shouldn't be able to buy the old tank or cap.

The part number that looks most reasonable is 8D0 121 403D - is this right? I've seen some A4 poster's engine area pics that have a tank that says G-12.
TIME OUT FOR RANT: I have to hope that they changed the grade of plastic they were using - one of my other cars (my beater) is a 21-year old SAAB that still has its original tank in a similar configuration, no cracks - I've had it for 18+ years, so I know that it has never been changed. A relative has a 16-year-old Volvo turbo, same thing. RANT OVER.
By the way, I believe that my car came with G-12 in it, I think Audi changed some time in 1996. I'm currently running with Zerex G-05, which meets Mercedes-Benz standards as well as those for all new Chrysler and Ford products, costs $7/gal vs. the Audi dealer price of $20 for G-12. Zerex claims that it is compatible with G-12 (which they make for VAG and call G-30), it's also a low-phosphate mix. I use this in all my cars, so I have a stock of it.

I'm on my third expansion tank. Both previous ones developed cracks, and the current one has begun leaking, too. I blame the material and design of the tank.

Chances are, that '69 Mustang still has a good tank (if it had one)! But how does he make it fit?

I can't find the invoice in my "filing system."
