Default Question on antifreeze

I have coolant from the dealer that is blue. The part number on the bottle is ZVW237105. I was adding it to my 1997 B5 when I noticed a tag that said only use red antifreeze, part number G012A8DA1. Do not mix with any other fluid. Did the dealer send my the wrong stuff or is the two numbers compatible....Thanks,

- Matt

You must not mix G11 (blue) and G12 (pink), but you may mix G12+ (purple) with either G11 or G12

Default So, they sold me stuff that isnt good for my car?

It has the red/pink in the car, and im adding blue, so not good. Should I flush the system (I only added like 3 cups/6 when mixed) or leave it the way it is

Default It appears that way

The switch from G11 to G12 in new VW/Audi cars happened gradually in '96/'97. My '96 was delivered with G11 and I switched over to G12 within 6 months. I have used G12 without any issues since. In an older car I would not switch the coolant type.

You must not mix G11 and G12. The mix may turn into a gelatinous goop. The dealer should have sold you G12 Plus (purple), if they didn't know for sure if G11 or G12 was in your cooling system. I'd go back and try to get at least the proper coolant for free.

Dump the mix and flush thoroughly until the water comes out clean. Refill with either G12 or G12 Plus (50:50 -- H20:coolant concentrate).

You don't have to stick with the Pentosin coolant the dealer sells. You may also use the proper ZEREX (OEM supplier) coolant:

Default BASF G48 (= VW G11) is blue-green.

I suppose each manufacturer, BASF(= ZEREX), Pentosin, etc, uses slightly different dyes.

BASF G30 is the same as VW G12.

The "G" always stands for Glysantin® (monoethylene glycol base).

Default Followup:

Went really smooth. Coming out of the block, it was a light brown/yellow with a blue tint. It took about five seconds to clean out and run clear. The radiator, however, ran black for about twenty seconds then cleared up. I was going to take some photos, but it started to rain really hard, so I had to rush. Car seems to run smoother, but still overheats a little when im sitting still (think i need a thermostat.) All in all, took me 30 minutes to do and was fun.
